Political Awareness

Empowement Fair
Look for Social Action Committee at the Empowerment Fair October 27, when we are sponsoring our “What's Happening on the West Side, Town Hall Meeting.” We have invited community leaders to help us discuss Health Care, Economic Development and Crime. Danny Davis is our featured presenter. This event will begin at 1:00 pm.

Deputy Registrar Training
Invitations are being extended to Sorors to participate in the training. Social Action Committee will host the training at D'Estee. If you have not signed up for the training, yo may do so at the December Chapter meeting. As soon as the date is confimed, it will be communicated to everyone who registers. Your previous designation as a Deputy Registrar expires after 2 years. Re-certification is required to continue in the role as a Deputy Registrar. Be prepared to register a new voter.

Jena 6
Support for the Jena 6 and other victims of racial injustice will continue. If the community plans another mobilization, we will organize a bus for the next road trip. Jena 6 is the latest example of a justice system in this country that seems to involve “JUS T-US” and we have had enough. We will mobilize with others to make our voices heard. When the call comes, we will all march together.

Social Action Committee understands that "politics" are part of every aspect of our lives from cradle to grave. We are asking for the full Chapter support and participation as we explore the various issues that affect our lives - - whether it is to educate ourselves or the community about issues, or to develop action strategies to confront the issues. Our goal is to implement Grand Chapter initiatives - as they apply to our local issues and concerns.

Meetings are the 4th Monday of each month (except Christmas), 7:00pm at D'Estee.

Our Focus

While our focus has lately been at the national level, where there remains much work to do, we cannot afford to lose our focus at the local level where policies directly affect us, our neighbors and the communities where we live. We see the stories of the homeless seeking shelter from the cold weather in Chicago, burning themselves to death as they start fires to keep warm in garages, cars and abandoned houses. In our city we see taxes going up, jobs being lost, fees increasing and in the midst of it all, a predatory and unethical scheme sponsored by the city to steal and resell peoples' cars.

Other predators prowl through our neighborhoods looking for ways to confiscate the property of those struggling to hold on to it. Eventually these properties are likely to be replaced with unaffordable housing creating even deeper hardships for our community. Threats to reduce public transporation routes in areas that are already underserved and continued disparities in education and healthcare are devastating in our communities. If we are capable, have intelligence to connect the dots between policy and practice, do not challenge, lobby and fight for these issues, who will?
